learning sequence
After a visit to the local art gallery the students decide they would like to learn more about the art movements and artist that they saw at the gallery. As students are unable to physically attend the Gallery, staff have offered to work in an online environment to help teach them more. After receiving an email from the gallery staff the problem was put forward to the students - what would you like to learn about, how would you like to present this information and what online environment will we use to communicate with the gallery staff as a class?
The students were asked to create a brainstorm in small groups using the computer. Most children chose to use Bubbl.us as it is a program they are familiar with. This brainstorm is to include what they have already learnt about, what they would like to learn more about and an overview of their favourite topic. An internet search is also performed at this stage, for the students to find a picture of their favourite art work. After creating their brainstorm the class gathered for a group discussion to discuss how they will present their information to the art gallery so they can teach the students what they would like to know. The students chose to work with Blogger so that it is easily accessible and it is an easy program for students to work with.
The students then created their first blog page which included the information from their brainstorm. Students were encouraged to make a blog that was individual and creative by using as many ICT tools as they would like along with images they have found on the internet. After their first blog has been created we discussed as a class which tool they would like to use to communicate with the Gallery. The class were shown three different tools, Skpye, Web conferencing and a podcast. The class chose to use Skype as it was the most personal way of communicating. An email was then drafted by the students informing the Gallery of their decisions along with all of their blog addresses.
For the next three lessons students engaged with the Gallery staff via Skype and then prepared their weekly blog. The students received assistance with their blog from the learning manager as required and their blogs were assesse
